Laparoscopic cholecystectomy The surgery which removes the gallbladder is known as the cholecystectomy. The gallbladder is removed by a 5 to 8 inch long cut, in the abdomen. During an open cholecystectomy, the incision is made just below the ribs on right side and goes just below the waist. Hiatal hernia Esophagus passes through an opening in the diaphragm (i.e. hiatus) on its way to connect to the stomach.
